The Montreal Canadiens announced today, the signing of defenceman James Wisniewski from the New York Islanders. In exchange, the Habs will forfeit a compensatory 2nd round pick in the 2011 draft and a 5th round pick in the 2012 draft. The habs have faltered lately and the speed and stamina gap between the older and younger defensemen on the team has become painfully obvious as of late. This move should help to bridge that gap while adding a competent quarterback for an iffy powerplay.
Wisniewski’s first start as a Hab is expected to be Thursday night in Tampa Bay.
While talk of a possible move for Kevin Bieksa has been running wild for months now, one had to wonder what the habs would have to give up to make such a trade and giving up two draft picks for a player of Wisniewski’s calibre is a very good move by Gauthier.
Next move: A bruising power forward.
